I know the internet is raving about becoming a morning person and curating a perfect morning routine.But are you the person who feels groggy and unmotivated to work in the mornings but your productivity spikes up during the evenings ?
Science shows us that everyone has an individual peak performance window,a set of hours in everyday where our productivity shoots up.The world has been telling us to wake up early to work and that is the epitome of discipline.
But I’m sure some would work better being a night owl,some better in the mornings and some better in between.Waking up to work daily might not work for someone,the same way staying up late also might not work for someone.Because we as humans have individual chronotypes that are different for all of us.

What is a Chronotype and why should you know yours ?

Human chronotype refers to your natural biological preference for being active and alert at certain times of the day—basically, your body’s internal timing system for sleep, wakefulness, and peak performance. It’s why some people are early birds and others are night owls.
Chronotype also refers to your natural circadian rhythm, our natural sleep wake cycle.All humans have an internal clock we have which helps us to wake up,sleep and work better during certain time frames of the day.
Understanding our chronotype can help us in working according to our body’s circadian rhythm.This will help us to be in tune with our internal clock and we can schedule our activities,wake up,and sleep based on what time works best for which activity.

Chronotypes was first introduced by Dr. Michael Breus, PhD, in 2016 ,according to his research humans can be categorized into
- Bear chronotype
- Lion chronotype
- Wolf chronotype
- Dolphin chronotype
Bear Chronotype

This is the most common chronotype in humans,an estimated 55% of the human population fall under the Bear chronotype.Bears adhere to the sun’s cycle.This means they wake up and go to sleep during sunrise and sunset respectively.
They are the most productive during the late mornings into the afternoon.They dont face any issues with sleeping.They are socially outgoing people and they are prone to energy dips in the late afternoons after lunch.

Ideal daily schedule for Bear Chronotype
- Wakeup – Bears are early risers.Your preferred wake up time can be between 7am – 8am
- 10am – 12 pm – Peak productivity window.You can use this time to work on your high demanding tasks
- 3pm to 6pm – Experience the mid day energy dips.This window can be used for more easier,lighter admin tasks
- 6pm to 9pm – Either you can schedule it for social hours or can use it to wind down for the day
- 11pm – Sleep.A full 8 hours of sleep is essential to function at their best for the
Tips for Bears:
- Protect your peak hours (8 AM – 12 PM) for deep work
- Schedule repetitive or admin work in the early afternoon
- Avoid caffeine after 2 PM
- Stick to a consistent sleep-wake cycle, even on weekends
Lion Chronotype

Lion chronotype humans are the early risers of the whole population.They can easily wake up before dawn and are the most productive until mid day.Lion chronotype people are naturally optimistic and have follow a disciplined lifestyle.
About 15-20 % of the population is lions.They tend to be good leaders.An early afternoon nap can tend to be the perfect sweet spot for lions to tackle their energy dips during the afternoon.

Ideal daily schedule for Lion Chronotype
- Wakeup -Lions are the earliest of risers.Your preferred wake up time can be between 5am – 6am
- 8am – 12 pm – Peak productivity window.You can use this time to work on your high demanding tasks
- 1pm to 3pm – Experience the mid day energy dips.This window can be used a quick power nap
- 6pm to 9pm – A good dinner and a self care evening work the best
- 10pm – Sleep.A full 8 hours of sleep is essential to function at their best
Tips for Lions:
- Schedule critical work in the early morning
- Avoid overcommitting to late-night social events or work
- Say no to caffeine after noon
- Ideal for roles that require early starts and proactive leadership
Wolf Chronotype

The wolf chronotype as you would have guessed are night hunters.Do you have issues waking up in the morning,then you probably might be a wolf chronotype.Wolves chronotype doesn’t feel tired until the mid night.They prefer to work in the afternoon and later evenings.
They also prefer to wake up in the midday and are naturally creative and intense people.About 15-20 percent of the population are Wolves.Wolves’ biological clock is out of sync so they might find it difficult to fit in with the societal expectations.

- Wake up during mid-day
- Have two productivity windows in the 12pm to 3pm and from 7pm – 12 am
- Highly creative
- Reserved and introverted
Ideal daily schedule for Wolf Chronotype
- Wakeup -Wolves wake up time can be between 8am – 9am
- 8am – 12 pm – Energy dips.They cannot go straight into work,so this window can be used for easier admin tasks.
- 3pm to 5pm – This is the peak productivity time for Wolves to work on their most demanding task
- 7pm to 12pm – This is their next productivity window to work on their creative tasks
- 12pm – Sleep.Wolves have a hard time sleeping and they can aim to sleep for 7 hours a day.
Tips for Wolves:
- Avoid forcing intense morning routines — honor your natural rhythm
- Batch creative or strategic work after 3 PM
- Use mornings for prep, not performance
- If possible, negotiate flexible working hours to optimize your chronotype
Dolphin Chronotype

Dolphins are very restless people and they have a very hard time sleeping.The circadian biology of dolphins is completely flipped. The parts of the dolphin’s brain that support alertness are more active at night than in other chronotypes.
Noise and Light might be their disturbing factors that affect their sleep schedule.As a result of their disturbed sleep schedule they are often tired in the mornings. But they have a peak productivity window between 10am to 2pm.
Since this is when dolphins are most productive, they should plan their most crucial work for the mid-morning to early afternoon window. To better manage their constantly dwindling energy, this chronotype should also take into account short walks, breaks, and modest snacks.

- Have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep
- About 10 % of the population are dolphins
- Their peak productivity window is between 10am-2pm
- Highly intelligent, cautious, detail-oriented
Ideal daily schedule for Wolf Chronotype
- Wakeup -Dolphins wake up time can be between 7am – 8am
- 9am – 10 am – Dolphins tend to engage in lighter tasks during the mornings.
- 10am to 2pm – This is the peak productivity time for Dolphins to work on their most demanding task
- 2pm to 6pm -Productivity dips and this period can be reserved for lighter tasks
- 12pm – Sleep.Dolphins are light sleepers,a proper wind down routine can help them fall asleep easier.
Tips for Dolphins:
- Protect your sleep with a consistent wind-down routine
- Avoid caffeine after 10 AM
- Use your mid-morning window (8–10 AM) for high-focus work
- Practice stress-reduction techniques regularly (journaling, mindfulness)
