Ultimate Guide to Glimmers and how to seek them in our daily life for Joy and Safety

Glimmers are those micromoments in our lives that cause tiny mood shifts sending cues of safety to our nervous system.

Have you ever felt a tiny moment of happiness when hearing a

  • bird sing in your background,
  • the smell of pouring rain,
  • a newly bloomed flower in your garden.

Yes these are the little moments of glimmers in your daily life.

Glimmers are tiny bursts of happiness that give us a sense of security, hope, and happiness. Social worker Deb Dana¹ initially proposed the concept as part of Polyvagal Theory.

They help the body feel connected and regulated, which triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which makes us feel open and at ease.

Glimmers are the opposite of triggers.

Triggers are based on our experience in life certain cues from the environment might make us immediately uncomfortable, leaving us feeling scared.

Our body might immediately move into a stress response, and rush to flight, fright or fight mode. This is just our nervous system protecting us from a possible danger.

Continually living in this state of fear will make us lead a life of unhappiness

The same way Glimmers are an exact opposite cue that helps us to calm our nervous system down and enriches our body with feeling of safety and joy.

Luckily we can find and savor these moments of joy in our daily life and here is the guide to show you how.

Lets say everyday you have a habit of having tea in your garden.Set an intention to actively look for glimmers during that time.

They could be like, a new flower bloom in your garden, butterflies swarming around the flower, the chill breeze in the garden, your cat purring in your lap.

When you spot them, take a deep breath and savour them.Be in the present moment and enjoy these glimmers.

Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude in our daily life can help us be present.

Gratitude rewire our brain to mostly look out for moments of joy in our life.

So gratitude can help us identify these glimmers in our daily life when we are actively seeking out for joyful moments in our life.

This becomes an etched memory in our heart,so when we come back and remember this moment we can once again activate glimmers in our mind without physically having them.

That’s the power of gratitude

Activate your senses

Identifying glimmers is a form of mindfulness.

Glimmers don’t arise only in our physical world, they can arise as memories in our life, like the time we laughed harder with our childhood friends, the time we succeeded in something. These glimmers can be activated while we are intune with our 5 senses.

This simple exercise has helped me to activate all my senses immediately.5-4-3-2-1 exercise

How I used to tell you to maintain an accomplishment list ? The same way keeping track of your glimmers in a journal can help you identify more of them.

Notice the pattern of what are the best times you spot a glimmer,so that you can do more of such activities in your daily life. And also if you are feeling sad/lost you know where to go to find glimmers quickly.

Also using this journal you can reflect on how these glimmers made you feel and this practice can help you connect to yourself more often.

Our brain has a tendency to identity more of what we seek.So this glimmer journal can have a positive impact of identify more and more gimmers in our daily life.

Limit your screen time

Glimmers are found in our daily life, not on our small rectangular devices.Keeping your attention in the screens always decreases the chances for us to identify glimmers.

So try digital detox for a while or mindfully reduce your screentime. While we are not tied to our devices we can be in the present moment and identify these glimmers perfectly.

Not only identifying them, savouring them becomes more enjoyable. Now you dont need to strain to find these glimmers, they automatically appear

Happiness shared is happiness doubled. When you identify them and have someone next to you show it to them and tell them how happy it makes them feel.

If your loved ones get you flowers and it brings you glimmers.Let them know how happy this act of kindness makes you feel and how grateful you are for them.

If at all you have no one presently to share, take a picture and maybe share it as a story upload. These can bring in glimmers to others life as well when they view it.
